Choosing your windows
What is a storm window?
A storm window is a separate window installed on the interior or exterior of an existing primary window. It adds another layer of glass or acrylic and a still air space while allowing the original window to remain in place.
Should I choose interior or exterior storm windows?
Interior storm windows are installed from inside and can be a good choice when the exterior must remain unchanged or is difficult to reach. Exterior storm windows protect the primary window from weather and are available in fixed, two-track, triple-track, and other operating styles. The best choice depends on the opening, access, appearance, and ventilation you need.
Compare interior and exterior windowsWhat is the difference between two-track and triple-track storm windows?
A two-track unit places glass and screen components in two channels. A triple-track unit gives the two glass sashes and screen separate channels, allowing more independent movement. The original window type and the way you want to ventilate the room should guide the choice.
Compare two-track and triple-trackDo storm windows come with screens?
Screens are included with many operating two-track and triple-track models, while fixed windows and some interior systems do not use them. The product configurator shows whether a screen is included or available for the exact model you choose.
Are the screens full size or half size, and can they be removed?
Screen layout and removability depend on the window model. Some operating windows use a half screen and others offer different screen configurations. Check the selected product or ask us before ordering if a particular ventilation setup matters.
Can you make storm windows for old or unusual openings?
Yes. Our windows are made to the measurements supplied for each opening, and several systems suit historic homes and nonstandard sizes. Arches and other specialty shapes require photographs, additional dimensions, and review before an order is placed.
What is the smallest or largest storm window you can make?
Fabrication limits vary by model, glass type, and configuration. Enter the width and height on the product page to check that model, or send us approximate dimensions and photos when an opening is especially small, large, or spans several windows.
Can one large fixed storm window cover several existing windows?
Sometimes, but the opening, support points, glass limits, handling weight, and safe installation all need review. Send a straight-on photo, overall width and height, individual window layout, quantity, and ZIP code. We will confirm whether one fixed unit is practical or whether the project should be divided into multiple panels.
Measuring & installation
How do I measure for storm windows?
Choose the product and mounting method first, because each system is measured at a different part of the opening. Take every measurement requested by the applicable guide, measure in more than one place where instructed, and do not subtract an allowance unless the product guide tells you to.
Open the measuring guidesAm I entering the opening size or the finished window size?
Enter the dimensions requested by the specific product and mounting guide. Most made-to-measure products ask for the opening at the mounting surface; the manufacturer applies the appropriate fabrication allowance. Do not use the glass size or copy the size of an old sash unless the guide specifically asks for it.
Should I subtract anything from my measurements?
Do not make a general deduction. Follow the guide for the exact product and mounting method, and enter the measurements it requests. If paint, trim, or an uneven opening changes the available space, send photos before ordering.
Can a storm window fit a sloped sill or shallow opening?
Often, but the correct mounting method and required depth depend on the window. Photograph the full opening, sill profile, and mounting surface with a ruler visible so our team can help identify a suitable system.
How do I order an off-center meeting rail?
Measure the meeting-rail location as shown in the product guide and include it with the order when that option is available. If the existing sash is not centered, send a straight-on photo and the requested rail measurement before production.
Will you review my measurements?
Yes. If you are unsure about the mounting surface or a difficult opening, send clear photographs with your measurements before ordering. Our team can help identify the appropriate guide and flag details that need another look.
Request a measurement reviewCan I install storm windows myself?
Many accessible, standard openings can be suitable for homeowner installation. Dry-fit the unit, keep the frame square, fasten it as directed, preserve required drainage, and test operation. Use a qualified installer for difficult access, heavy panels, damaged surrounds, or any condition you cannot safely manage.
Open the installation guidesWhere should I caulk an exterior or interior storm window?
For an exterior storm window with weep holes, apply exterior-grade caulk across the top and down both sides. Do not caulk the bottom edge or cover the weep holes, because water must be able to drain. Interior storm windows do not use that exterior drainage path; when the installation guide calls for sealant, caulk continuously around all four sides. Always follow the instructions for the exact model.
See how weep holes protect your windowsDo exterior storm windows arrive with pre-drilled installation holes?
No. Our exterior storm windows do not arrive with pre-drilled installation holes. Dry-fit and square the window first, then mark and drill pilot holes through the mounting flange in the locations required by the installation guide before fastening the unit.
How do the exterior windows fit an opening that is slightly uneven?
Exterior window sizes are ordered in 1/8-inch width increments and 1/4-inch height increments. A 1/8-inch difference in either direction will not prevent the window from fitting: the clamshell is adjustable by up to 1 inch, and all four sides include adjustable self-sealing dual-durometer vinyl thermal breaks that can compensate for an opening that is not perfectly even. Use the measuring guide for the exact model before rounding a dimension.
Do you provide installation?
We offer installation coordination through our growing installer network and do our best to connect customers with a qualified local professional. Availability varies by location and is not guaranteed. You may also use the installation guides or hire a local contractor or handyman.

What does ENERGY STAR certified mean for a storm window?
ENERGY STAR certification applies to a specific model and climate zone. It indicates that the model meets the program requirements for low-e storm windows in the listed zone. Certification does not automatically apply to every product or glass option.
Learn about ENERGY STAR certificationWhat is an AERC rating?
The Attachments Energy Rating Council independently rates the energy performance of window attachments, including storm windows. Its directory reports values such as U-factor, solar heat gain, visible transmittance, and air leakage for specific rated models.
Learn what AERC ratings meanCan storm windows reduce drafts and outside noise?
A well-fitted storm window can reduce air movement around an existing window and may make a room feel more comfortable. The added panel and air space can also reduce some outside sound. Results vary with the primary window, installation, seals, glass, and the source of the noise.
Read the sound-reduction guideWhat glass options are available, including Low-E, tempered, and obscure glass?
Available glass varies by model. Low-E glass improves thermal performance, tempered glass is available where safety glazing is needed, and obscure glass is offered on select products for privacy. The product page lists the choices for that exact window.
What frame materials and colors are available?
Most of our operating storm windows use finished aluminum frames. Standard colors commonly include white, black, bronze, tan, and silver, with custom colors on select models. Finish choices vary by product and may not match another manufacturer exactly.
Can I buy replacement glass, a screen, or another part?
Replacement components depend on the original model and order. Send the order number when available, plus photos of the full window and the component. We will confirm what can be supplied before you purchase anything.
Will storm windows qualify for rebates?
Programs vary by utility, state, and location, and eligibility often depends on the exact certified model. Check the current program rules before purchasing. We can provide certification information for a model, but we cannot promise that a project will qualify for a particular rebate.
Review credits and rebatesOrders & shipping
Are the windows custom made?
Yes. Each window is configured and made for the measurements and options submitted with the order. Review dimensions, mounting style, color, glass, and operation carefully before approving a custom order.
How long does an order take?
Lead times vary by product, manufacturer, season, and order size. The current estimate is shown or provided during the ordering process. Custom production begins after the required information and approvals are complete.
Can a custom-window order be expedited?
Expedited production is not available for every model and cannot be assumed. Ask us before ordering and we will check the current production options for the window you need.
How are storm windows shipped?
Windows are packaged for freight or parcel delivery according to their size, weight, glass, and destination. Large orders may arrive on a pallet or require a freight appointment. Inspect the shipment promptly and keep the packaging while any damage is documented.
Read about shipping and deliveryIs shipping included in the online price?
Shipping and handling are calculated separately because the cost depends on window size, glass, quantity, destination, and whether parcel or freight service is required. The applicable charge is shown during the ordering process.
Where do you ship, including Alaska?
We ship throughout the United States, but available service and cost vary by destination and package size. Alaska and other locations that require special service need a destination-specific quote.
Do you offer discounts for multiple windows?
Multi-window pricing depends on the products, quantities, and whether the windows can be produced and shipped together. Contact us with approximate sizes and quantities for a project-specific review.
Can I get a rough quote before I have final measurements?
Yes. Approximate width, height, quantity, glass preference, and destination can provide a planning estimate. Final pricing and production still require the exact measurements and options for every opening.
What payment methods do you accept?
Available checkout methods are shown at checkout and include major credit cards and supported digital payment options. Financing may also be available through Affirm for eligible purchases.
Can I change or cancel a custom order?
Contact us immediately. Because custom products are made for a specific opening, changes and cancellations are limited once review or production has begun. The applicable terms depend on the order stage and are explained in our returns and cancellation policy.
What happens if I entered the wrong measurements after ordering?
Contact us immediately. Do not wait for production or delivery. Whether a dimension can be corrected depends on the order stage; custom products may not be changeable once review or fabrication has begun.
How much do custom storm windows cost?
Price depends on the exact width and height, window style, frame, glass, screen, finish, and delivery requirements. Choose a product and enter your dimensions to see available options and pricing, or send us photographs and approximate measurements if you need help identifying the right product first.
