What does ENERGY STAR certified mean?

ENERGY STAR is the EPA’s label for energy-efficient products. Here is what it tells you about a storm window, what the EPA estimates you can save, and which of our windows have earned it.

a year
Average savings on heating and cooling
10%
of your bills
Over single-pane clear glass with no storm window

The added cost of a certified storm window

EPA estimates for ENERGY STAR certified low-e storm windows, which the EPA calls conservative. Your savings depend on your climate, your home and your utility rates.

A rare seal

29 of the 30 ENERGY STAR certified storm window listings in the country are windows we offer.

Most storm windows on the market have never earned it. If you want the EPA’s savings estimate to apply to your windows, the window has to be on this list.

ENERGY STAR

What the government seal means

ENERGY STAR is a program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The EPA sets the performance requirements for storm windows, and a window is independently certified against them. The result is listed publicly, model by model and for a specific climate zone. A company cannot simply put the logo on a window; only a listed model may carry it.

How a window earns the label

1

Tested

The window is evaluated for how much air it lets through and how well its Low-E glass holds heat, for a specific climate zone.

2

Certified

The result is independently certified and the model is listed with its climate zone. Certification belongs to the model, not the brand.

3

Labeled

Only listed models may carry the ENERGY STAR mark, which is why you will see it on some of our windows and not others.

What certification does and does not do

It tells you that independent testing backs the window’s air leakage and Low-E glass performance for the climate zone it is listed for. It does not repair a damaged window, and it does not promise a savings figure for your house.

Fit still matters. A made-to-measure window installed to the instructions will perform better than a loose one, so make sure the original window is sound before you add a storm window.

FAQs

How rare is ENERGY STAR certification for storm windows?

Very rare. The EPA’s certified storm window list had just 30 listings when we last checked (October 2026). 29 of the 30 are windows we offer.

What does ENERGY STAR certified mean?

It means the specific model has been tested and listed as meeting the ENERGY STAR program’s performance requirements for its product type and climate zone.

Are all of your windows ENERGY STAR certified?

No. Certification is model by model. Most of our Low-E aluminum storm windows, including the architectural exterior double-hung and slider, and our vinyl interior compression window are certified. Look for the ENERGY STAR logo on the product photo and the certified line on the product page.

How do I know a window is certified?

Certified windows carry the ENERGY STAR logo on their photo in our collections and a certified line on their product page, with the climate zone and ratings. If you would like the certification listing for a model, ask us and we will send it.

How much does the EPA say storm windows save?

The EPA estimates that certified low-e storm windows save homeowners about $350 a year, roughly 10 percent of heating and cooling bills, over single-pane clear glass windows without existing storm windows.

How long does it take to pay back the extra cost?

The EPA estimates the incremental cost of ENERGY STAR certified storm windows pays back in about three years. The EPA calls these estimates conservative.

What are the Northern and Southern climate zones?

ENERGY STAR certifies products for particular climate zones. Northern-zone models are evaluated for colder climates and Southern-zone models for warmer ones, so choose a window rated for where you live.

Does certification apply to the whole window?

The certification applies to the storm window model as tested and listed. It does not rate your existing window or your installation, so make sure the original window is sound and the storm window is installed to the instructions.
